CertainTeed Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $425-$1,150 installed, depending on how many shingles failed, the pitch of your roof, and whether the underlayment beneath them is still sound. We stock CertainTeed-compatible shingles on our trucks and can match most active product lines the same week we inspect the roof. The way most Los Angeles homeowners discover they need this repair is simple: they spot a shingle in the yard after a Santa Ana wind event, or they notice a dark water stain on the ceiling after the first real rain of the season.

CertainTeed shingles fail in ways that are predictable once you know what to look for. In Los Angeles, the usual culprits are UV degradation of the adhesive strip, wind-lift at the eaves, and granule loss that leaves the asphalt layer exposed. Greg Holloway grew up in Eagle Rock, and he’ll tell you the roofs he saw as a kid in the 134 corridor are the same ones he’s repairing now, twenty years of sun will find every weak point a shingle has.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

This repair guidance applies to the CertainTeed lines we see most across Los Angeles: XT 25, XT 30, Landmark, Landmark Pro, Presidential Shake, Presidential Shake TL, and the newer Landmark Solaris with its reflective granule coating. If you’re not sure which line you have, check the nailing instructions wrapper left in your eave or attic, or look for the printed selvedge edge on a spare bundle. Most Los Angeles homes built between 1995 and 2015 with architectural shingles are wearing Landmark or Landmark Pro, and both are still in active production, which makes matching straightforward.

One compatibility gotcha owners miss: CertainTeed changed the exposure and butt geometry on their Presidential line over the years. A shingle from a 2005 production run will not lay flat against a 2024 production shingle on the same roof plane. If your roof has older Presidential Shake, we measure the exposure and butt width before ordering so the repair doesn’t telegraph as a visible patch. For most other lines, current production matches legacy dimensions closely enough that a repair blends within a season of weathering.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for CertainTeed specifically, we recommend OEM shingles for active product lines because the warranty language on CertainTeed’s system hinges on matched components. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but they void the manufacturer’s wind warranty if the repair is on a registered system. We carry both, and we’ll show you the price difference before you choose. Tilehurst Roofing is an independent roofing contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed, and we also stock repair materials from GAF and Owens Corning when a homeowner wants a cross-brand comparison.

Signs Your CertainTeed Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout elbows. This is the earliest reliable warning. CertainTeed shingles shed surface granules as the asphalt oxidizes; when you see a tablespoon or more per linear foot of gutter, the shingle’s UV protection is spent and the repair window is open but narrowing.
  • Cupping or curling at the shingle corners. Los Angeles heat cycles bake the asphalt until it shrinks, and the corners lift first. The nail heads beneath are still holding, but the seal strip has released, which means wind can now get under the shingle.
  • A raised or flapping edge at the rake or eave after wind. This is wind-lift, and it’s the failure we see most after Santa Ana events. One lifted edge becomes a path for the next gust to peel the entire course.
  • Dark streaks or moss-like growth in shaded roof valleys. In Los Angeles canyon neighborhoods and north-facing slopes, trapped moisture accelerates rot in the shingle’s fiberglass mat. By the time the streak is visible from the ground, the shingle is usually past repair and needs replacement.
  • Water staining on the ceiling or upper wall below a specific roof section. A failed shingle lets water through to the underlayment, and once the underlayment is breached, the leak follows the roof deck to the first seam. By the time interior staining shows, the shingle failure has been active for weeks or months.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Los Angeles single-family home, most CertainTeed shingle repairs fall into these installed ranges:

  • 1-5 shingle replacement: $425-$650. Includes matching shingles, new roofing nails, sealant, and a written guarantee on the repair.
  • 6-20 shingle replacement with underlayment patch: $650-$1,150. Includes new underlayment in the affected area and re-nailing of adjacent lifted shingles.
  • Valley or ridge cap repair: $500-$900. Includes new CertainTeed ridge cap or valley flashing as needed.
  • Full roof section (one slope) re-shingle: Priced by square footage after inspection. This is a replacement, not a repair, and we give you a written line-item price before any work starts.

What drives the range in Los Angeles is mostly access and pitch. A single-story roof with a 4:12 pitch and easy ladder access lands at the low end. A two-story home with a steep pitch, a tile-roof transition, or a roof that requires a safety harness and ridge anchor lands higher. The price you get from us is the price you pay: every quote is written, itemized, and in your hands before a single shingle comes off. Every repair is covered by our written guarantee, and if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things every Los Angeles homeowner can safely check from the ground: granules in the gutter and lifted edges you can see from the sidewalk with binoculars. Neither requires a ladder. What you should not do is walk a pitched roof in running shoes with a hammer and a bundle of shingles. Roofs are unforgiving surfaces, and the shingle you’re trying to save is not worth a fall.

The DIY failure we see most often is the misdiagnosed seal strip. Owners re-seal lifted shingles with hardware-store roofing cement and think they’ve fixed the problem, but the shingle lifted because the nail pattern was wrong from the start, or because the decking has swelled. The cement holds for a season, hides the real problem, and the leak returns worse. Our techs are on the roof with harnesses and the right replacement stock, and we’ll show you photos of the actual damage before we touch it. Know the price before the first tile moves.
