CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your CertainTeed underlayment or roof deck has failed, we stock CertainTeed-compatible underlayment products and repair decking on our trucks, and most Los Angeles underlayment replacements run $1,100 to $3,400 installed depending on square footage and deck condition. We can usually schedule the repair within the same week, not the same month. The way most homeowners find out is simple: a ceiling stain appears after a hard rain, or a roofer doing routine maintenance lifts a shingle and finds plywood that’s gone soft from years of trapped moisture. In Los Angeles, the culprit is rarely a single storm. It’s heat, UV exposure, and the slow breakdown of underlayment that was never meant to last as long as the shingles above it.

Tilehurst Roofing is an independent roofing contractor. We’re not affiliated with CertainTeed, but we install and repair their products every week across Los Angeles, and we know exactly how their underlayment behaves after five, ten, and fifteen years in Southern California sun.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed makes several underlayment lines, and the right one depends on what’s already on your roof. The most common in Los Angeles are DiamondDeck, RoofRunner, WinterGuard, and Flintlastic SA. DiamondDeck is the synthetic workhorse: high traction, light weight, and rated for standard slope. RoofRunner is lighter and often used under tile. WinterGuard is the peel-and-stick ice and water shield many L.A. homeowners don’t realize they need in valleys and around chimneys until a wind-driven rain finds the gap. Flintlastic is the self-adhered modified bitumen used on low-slope sections, which are common on mid-century Los Angeles homes.

The compatibility gotcha that trips people up: CertainTeed’s synthetic underlayment is not a universal replacement for felt in every application. If your home has a tile roof with battens, the underlayment spec matters more than the shingle spec, and selecting the wrong weight class can void the warranty on the tile system. We check the existing product labeling, measure exposed strips, and match the replacement to both the roof assembly and the Los Angeles building code requirement for the roof’s slope and fire zone.

When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket, for underlayment we recommend staying with CertainTeed when the warranty is still active. For decking, the decision is simpler: CDX plywood or OSB rated for roof sheathing, thickness matched to the existing deck, usually 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch. Aftermarket decking is fine as long as the thickness and exposure rating are correct. We buy from local Los Angeles suppliers, so material is usually at our yard within a day.

One more thing worth knowing: we also stock parts and underlayment from GAF and Owens Corning, so if your roof is a hybrid of materials, we can handle the whole repair without running back and forth.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on ceilings or walls after rain. This is the classic symptom. The shingles often look fine from the ground, but a tear in the underlayment or a soft deck seam is letting water through slowly. The stain may appear days after the rain, not during it.
  • Spongy or sagging roof deck when walked on. If a section of the roof feels soft underfoot, the plywood or OSB underneath has absorbed moisture and lost its structural rating. In Los Angeles, this often shows up on older homes where the original deck was never replaced during a reroof.
  • Curling or lifting shingles with visible underlayment beneath. Southern California sun bakes the adhesive strip on shingles, and once they curl, exposed underlayment takes direct UV. Synthetic underlayment degrades fast in direct sun, and that means water gets to the deck sooner than anyone expected.
  • Granules collecting in gutters combined with dark patches on the roof. Granule loss itself is a shingle issue, but the dark patches mean the underlayment is showing through, and in Los Angeles that underlayment is now taking the heat load it was never designed for.
  • Interior moisture in the attic, especially after morning fog. Los Angeles coastal fog is a real factor. If your attic feels damp or you see condensation on the underside of the deck, the underlayment barrier has been compromised and moisture is moving through the assembly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a typical Los Angeles home with a 1,500 to 2,500 square foot roof, expect to pay $1,100 to $3,400 for underlayment replacement, which includes tear-off of the affected section, deck inspection, and installation of new CertainTeed underlayment. If the deck itself needs replacement, add $3 to $5 per square foot for the decking portion, including materials and labor. Here’s the line-item breakdown we give every customer before work starts:

  • Underlayment material (CertainTeed): $0.35 to $0.80 per square foot depending on product line
  • Deck sheathing (plywood or OSB): $2 to $3 per square foot for wood, plus fasteners
  • Labor and tear-off: $100 to $300 per 100 square feet, varying by slope and accessibility
  • Disposal and cleanup: included, not a line item we spring on you later

Every quote from Tilehurst Roofing is a written price before any work starts. No change orders, no surprise line items at the door. And every repair carries our written guarantee. If the fix fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails.

DIY or Call Us?

Underlayment and deck repair is not a weekend project. The work is done on your roof, under hot Los Angeles sun, and it requires removing whatever is above the underlayment to get to the problem. That means lifting shingles or tile, cutting out damaged decking, re-securing the roof assembly, and reinstalling everything so the roof remains watertight and code-compliant. Done wrong, a small leak becomes a structural problem inside a year. We’ve repaired enough DIY attempts in Eagle Rock and Los Feliz to say this plainly: if the deck has gone soft, a handyman patch won’t fix it. Call us at (945) 303-9821 for an honest assessment and a written quote. Know the price before the first tile moves.
