Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If your Owens Corning roof system has failed at the underlayment or deck level, we stock and install Owens Corning-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials across Los Angeles, with most repairs running $450-$1,800 installed depending on deck damage extent and square footage. We carry Owens Corning Deck Defense, ProArmor, and RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment on our trucks, and we can match your existing system the same week we inspect it. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem after a winter rain: water staining on the ceiling, granules in the gutter, or a soft spot near a roof penetration that wasn’t there last summer. By the time you see it inside, the underlayment has already been compromised for months, and the deck sheathing underneath is usually taking on water.
Tilehurst Roofing is an independent roofing contractor and not affiliated with Owens Corning. What that means for you is we match the product honestly rather than pushing whatever’s in the warehouse. If Owens Corning is the right fit for your roof, that’s what we install. If it isn’t, we’ll tell you before we quote.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning’s roofing system spans three underlayment lines that show up across Los Angeles neighborhoods from the flatlands of Van Nuys to the hillside homes in Eagle Rock: the entry-level Deck Defense synthetic, the mid-grade ProArmor, and the high-performance RhinoRoof synthetic. Each has a distinct compatibility envelope with Owens Corning shingle lines: Duration shingles pair with ProArmor or RhinoRoof, Oakridge systems typically specify ProArmor, and Supreme or starter-line installations often call for Deck Defense.
Identifying which underlayment you have is straightforward if you know where to look. The product name is printed across the roll face in repeating ink, visible in the attic or at the eave edge before the drip edge covers it. If the printing has faded or you’re looking at a tear from a past repair, the thickness tells you most of the story: Deck Defense runs about 25 mils, ProArmor closer to 40 mils, and RhinoRoof around 50 mils with a grippy textured surface. Owens Corning’s synthetic products are all slip-resistant when dry, which matters on a 4:12 pitch in the foothills. When we replace underlayment, we stock OEM Owens Corning material from our Los Angeles suppliers, and we’ll quote an aftermarket equivalent (usually from GAF or CertainTeed) only when an Owens Corning product is genuinely unavailable and you approve the swap in writing first. The decision goes on the quote line by line.
Signs Your Owens Corning Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water staining on ceilings or exterior walls after rain. This is the classic Los Angeles sign that your underlayment has torn or separated at a seam, and water is traveling under the shingles to reach your deck. The stain usually appears days after the storm because the water moves slowly through the sheathing.
- Soft or spongy decking when walked on. If a roofer or a handyman mentions the roof “gives” in a spot, the plywood or OSB deck beneath the underlayment has absorbed water and begun to delaminate. In Los Angeles, this is most common near valleys, chimneys, and plumbing vents, where flashing and underlayment both fail first.
- Granules accumulating in gutters or downspout splash blocks. Owens Corning shingles shed granules over time, but excessive granular loss near a specific area means water has been sitting on the underlayment, breaking down the shingle’s asphalt bond above it. The underlayment underneath is usually stained and brittle by that point.
- Visible tears or wrinkles at the eave edge. Los Angeles heat cycles expand and contract underlayment, and older felt or improperly fastened synthetic products can pull at fasteners. If you can see waviness or a tear at the eave from a ladder, the weather barrier is no longer continuous.
- Mold or musty smell in the attic after a wet winter. This tells you moisture is reaching the deck and staying trapped between the underlayment and the sheathing. In Los Angeles’ wet-dry cycles, that trapped moisture rots decking faster than you’d expect, especially in deeper valleys where the roof doesn’t get direct sun until late afternoon.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Underlayment-only replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $450-$950 for a standard single-story home section, while deck repair (cutting out and replacing rotted sheathing) adds $200-$500 per affected sheet depending on access and roof pitch. Most jobs we do in Los Angeles fall between $700 and $1,800 total when both underlayment and a section of deck need attention. That includes removing the shingles in the damaged area, replacing or repairing the deck, installing new Owens Corning or approved-equivalent underlayment with the correct fastening pattern, reinstalling the shingles, and hauling off every scrap.
What moves the number is deck damage: if only the underlayment is compromised, the repair is straightforward. If the deck has delaminated and we’re cutting out rotted OSB, the cost goes up with every sheet. We give you a written line-item price before any work starts, and that price doesn’t change at the door. Every underlayment and deck repair carries a written guarantee, and if the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, and put the guarantee in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things an owner can safely check from the ground or a ladder: visible eave-edge tears, staining on ceiling drywall inside, granule buildup in a specific gutter section. Those observations help you make an informed call. What we don’t recommend is opening up the roof yourself. Underlayment repair requires peeling back shingles in a specific order, cutting away damaged material without scoring the deck beneath, and re-fastening everything with the right pattern and overlap. Tear off one section wrong and you’ve created a new leak where you didn’t have one before. Roof work on a pitched surface is also a fall risk, and it’s not the place to learn. If you’re unsure whether the problem is underlayment, decking, or flashing, call us at (945) 303-9821. We’ll inspect it and give you a written quote before a single nail goes in.
FAQs
Owens Corning synthetic underlayments are engineered for a 25-30 year service life, but Los Angeles’ specific climate pattern – long dry UV exposure followed by intense winter rain – means real-world failures often happen at roof penetrations and valleys well before the material itself degrades. The underlayment doesn’t fail first; the flashing or sealant around a penetration fails first, and then water works its way under the underlayment’s edge. We generally see underlayment needing repair or replacement every 15-20 years on a Los Angeles roof, not because the product wore out, but because a seam or penetration opened up. Call (945) 303-9821 if you want us to assess where your roof stands.
Yes, in most cases we can remove shingles in the affected area, patch or re-secure the damaged underlayment section, and reinstall the shingles, as long as the surrounding material is still sound. The exception is when the tear runs across a valley or the underlayment has pulled away from the eave over a wide area; at that point, patching creates more seams than it solves. We’ll show you the damaged section before recommending either path, and the written quote will state exactly what we’re doing and why. Estimates are free.
Most underlayment-only repairs in Los Angeles are completed in one visit, usually four to six hours from setup to cleanup. If we’re replacing deck sheathing, the job typically runs a full day, primarily because we wait for the repaired deck section to be fastened and dried in before reinstalling shingles and testing the repair with water. You’ll know the timeline before we start, in writing, along with the price.
Yes, we stock Owens Corning Deck Defense, ProArmor, and RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment on our trucks, along with GAF and CertainTeed equivalents, so we can start a standard repair the day we diagnose it. If your repair requires a specific Owens Corning product we don’t have on hand, we source it from our Los Angeles suppliers the same day or the next morning. You’ll never be told we have a part when we don’t – the materials list goes right on your quote.
