Tamko Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Tamko shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $385 to $1,100 installed depending on how many shingles failed, whether the underlayment underneath is still sound, and how steep or complicated your roof section is. We keep Tamko-compatible shingles and matching accessories on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. You’ll usually spot the problem the same way every homeowner does: a shingle in the yard after a Santa Ana wind event, a dark water stain creeping across the bedroom ceiling, or a patch of granules collecting in the gutter after a hard rain.

Tamko builds their shingles in Missouri and Texas, but they’ve been on Los Angeles roofs long enough that a good number of homes here still carry Heritage, Elite Glass-Seal, and Titan XT lines. Failure is rarely the shingle’s fault. What we find is that Los Angeles heat, UV exposure, and those dry-season wind gusts work the sealant strip loose over time. Once a shingle lifts, the next wind event peels it back, and then the nails underneath start working their way out. By the time you see the shingle in the driveway, water has usually been getting under the course for at least a season.

If you’re reading this because a shingle just came off, don’t panic. Tamko shingles are still manufactured and still stocked. The bigger question is whether the shingle is the only thing that failed, or whether it took the underlayment and decking with it. We answer that with a roof inspection that doesn’t cost you anything extra before you commit.

Which Tamko Models This Applies To

Tamko’s current lineup breaks into three families: Heritage (the classic architectural shingle, including Heritage Woodgate and Heritage Vintage), Elite Glass-Seal (a more basic 3-tab strip shingle), and the newer Titan XT / StormFighter IR series built for impact and wind resistance. If your roof went on between roughly 2000 and 2015, you’re likely looking at Heritage or Elite Glass-Seal. We repair all of them.

The compatibility question that trips up Los Angeles homeowners is almost never the shingle itself. It’s matching the color and the exposure after years of UV fading. A brand-new Heritage Weathered Wood shingle will not match a roof that’s been under the Los Angeles sun for ten years. It’s brighter, less oxidized, and the granule coating still has its factory sheen. When we do a Tamko repair, part of the job is blending the new shingles with the surrounding field so the repair doesn’t announce itself from the street. Sometimes that means pulling shingles from a less visible roof plane to patch the visible one and installing the newer stock in the less visible area.

One more thing worth knowing: Tamko changed their sealant chemistry over the years. Older Heritage shingles used a thermoplastic sealant that behaves differently in Los Angeles heat than the current adhesives do. This matters when we’re re-sealing lifted shingles rather than replacing them. A shingle that sealed in Missouri in January isn’t necessarily going to re-seal the same way in a Los Angeles August. We account for that by using sealants rated for the same high-heat conditions your roof actually lives in.

We also carry matching accessories: ridge cap shingles, starter strips, and the Tamko-compatible underlayments that keep the repair warranty valid. And if your repair is substantial enough that you’re weighing repair against full replacement, we can quote both using any of seven manufacturers we stock: GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, or Boral. You’re not locked into Tamko just because Tamko is what’s up there now.

Signs Your Tamko Shingle Repair Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutter or at the downspout base. Asphalt shingles shed granules as they age, but a sudden concentration means the protective layer is eroding faster than normal. On Tamko shingles in Los Angeles, we typically trace this to a failed sealant strip letting the shingle flex and flap in the wind, wearing the surface down.
  • Curled or cupped shingle edges. Los Angeles’s dry heat bakes the asphalt over time, making shingles brittle at the corners. Once you can see daylight under the edge from the ground, the shingle is close to cracking or tearing off entirely.
  • A shingle in the yard after wind. This is the obvious one, but it’s worth understanding what it means: the sealant strip has already failed, and the nails have already started to loosen. The shingle in the yard is the last step in a process that started months ago.
  • Dark staining on the underside of roof decking in the attic. Water that gets under one lifted shingle travels along the underlayment and shows up as a slow, dark stain. By the time it’s visible on the ceiling, it’s been working on the decking for a while. This is a repair we’d rather do at the staining stage than the drywall stage.
  • Blisters on the shingle surface. Moisture trapped in the asphalt expands under extreme Los Angeles sun and forms small raised bumps. A few blisters are cosmetic. A field of them means the shingle is near the end of its useful life, and a repair will only buy you time, not decades.

None of these five symptoms is subtle. The trouble is that most of them happen in spots the homeowner doesn’t look at, which is how a minor repair turns into decking replacement and interior water damage. It happens all the time in the hills around Eagle Rock and the San Fernando Valley, where roofs take a beating from sun on one side and wind on the other.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Tamko shingle repairs in Los Angeles, you’re looking at $385 to $650 for a small section (a few shingles, resealing some lifted corners, replacing a piece of flashing) and $700 to $1,100 for a larger repair that involves replacing underlayment, multiple shingle courses, or ridge cap work. If the decking underneath has started to rot, the price goes up from there because we’re replacing structural material, not just covering it back up.

Every Tilehurst quote is itemized: shingle count, underlayment, nails and sealant, fasteners, flashing, disposal, and labor. You get that written price before any work starts, and the number on that page is the number you pay. We don’t do change orders that appear after the crew opens the roof. The written guarantee covers the repair for a full year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and if a repair fails inside that year, we come back at no charge and make it right.

Greg Holloway has been working and climbing Los Angeles roofs for going on two decades. He learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where the instructors were working roofers who treated a sloppy flashing job the way a surgeon treats a bad stitch. That’s the standard your repair gets quoted to, and documented, before the first shingle comes off.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do from the ground: clear debris from your gutters so water isn’t backing up under the shingle edges, inspect what you can from the ladder without getting onto the roof surface, and take photos of any shingle you find in the yard so you have a record of where the wind event happened. That’s the extent of it.

What we’d rather you not do: walk a steep Los Angeles roof without fall protection, pry up shingles to look at the underlayment, or attempt a nail-and-sealant repair from a ladder. A roof repair isn’t just a matter of slapping a shingle back down. The nail placement, the sealant type, the underlayment condition, and the flashing all work together. We’ve repaired plenty of homeowner attempts where the shingle was nailed through the wrong spot and water found its way in through the new nail hole. Know the price before the first tile moves. Call us at (945) 303-9821 and we’ll put a written quote in your hands, with no pressure and no high-pressure sales script.
