IKO Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

IKO shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $375 to $825 installed, depending on how many shingles failed and whether the underlayment beneath them is still sound. Most IKO repairs we handle are discovered after a winter windstorm lifts a few tabs, or when a homeowner spots granules collecting in their gutters and traces it back to one patch of the roof. If the decking underneath is still dry and solid, this is usually a half-day job with a written price in your hands before we pull a single shingle. Greg Holloway will tell you the same thing he’s told homeowners across Los Angeles for nearly two decades: know the price before the first tile moves.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO makes three main asphalt shingle lines you’ll find on Los Angeles roofs: the Cambridge architectural series, the Dynasty performance line with its larger exposure, and the older Marathon three-tab shingles that were common on homes built before 2005. The repair approach differs by model because the exposure, the part of the shingle you see, changes between lines. Cambridge shingles expose 5 5/8 inches, Dynasty exposes 5 7/8 inches, and Marathon three-tabs expose 5 inches exactly. That difference sounds minor, but if a repair crew layers the wrong exposure over the old course, water finds the gap between rows within a season or two.

You can identify what’s on your roof by checking the edge of a leftover bundle in the garage or looking at the manufacturer’s label printed on the back of a lifted shingle. If there are no leftovers, we identify the model during the estimate by measuring the exposure and matching the granule color against IKO’s current Los Angeles lineup. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: IKO changed its color lock and shade depth on Cambridge in 2018, so a repair using a current-alternative batch can look slightly lighter against a roof that’s been weathered for six or seven years. We account for that before ordering, and we’ll bring a sample shingle to the estimate so you see the match in daylight before anything gets nailed down.

When it comes to parts, we use IKO-branded shingles when the roof is under a manufacturer warranty or when the color match requires the genuine article. For older roofs past any prorated coverage, a quality aftermarket equivalent from our other stocked lines, GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, or Atlas, often matches just as well and lowers the parts cost. We’ll show you both options with real pricing so you make the call with your eyes open.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing

Los Angeles roofs fail differently than roofs in wet climates. We don’t get fifty inches of rain, but we do get UV exposure that cooks asphalt for 280 days a year, plus Santa Ana winds that work shingle tabs loose over time. Here’s what we see most often:

  • Granules in the gutter or at downspout corners. Asphalt shingles shed granules steadily as they age, but a sudden concentration in one area usually means the granule layer on one or two shingles is failing fast. The remaining asphalt underneath then bakes in the sun and cracks within a year or two.
  • Curling tabs or lifted corners. Los Angeles heat makes the adhesive strip on each shingle stiffen and eventually release. Once a tab lifts, wind gets under it, and the shingle stops protecting the nail heads beneath it.
  • Exposed nail heads or dark dots in a line. If you can see nail heads on the surface of a shingle, the shingle above was installed too high or has shifted. Exposed nails rust and back out, and each one becomes a tiny water entry point.
  • Dark streaks or moss at the lower edge of the roof. That dark staining is usually moisture held against the shingle longer than it should be, often because the drip edge at the roofline is missing or was never replaced. The shingle then degrades from the bottom up.
  • A missing shingle after a windstorm. Santa Ana gusts over 40 mph routinely peel one or two shingles off Los Angeles roofs each fall. The exposed area leaks quickly if it rains, and the surrounding shingles lose their seal and become the next ones to go.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what IKO shingle repair typically costs in Los Angeles, based on the scope of the failure:

Repair Scope Typical Installed Price
1 to 4 shingles replaced, no decking damage $375 to $525
5 to 12 shingles replaced, including sealing surrounding area $525 to $725
Shingle repair plus underlayment patch or drip edge section $725 to $1,100
Full roof slope replacement (one side of the house) $2,800 to $5,500

Those ranges include parts, labor, disposal of the failed material, and a written guarantee on every repair. They also include our written price before any work starts, so the number doesn’t change at the door. What drives the range upward is the condition of the underlayment, the decking being soft or water-stained, or access issues like a steep pitch or a second-story area that requires more setup time. We use a written line-item quote so you see exactly where the dollars go, and the guarantee covers the full repair for a full year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside that period, we come back at no charge, no questions.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to know whether your IKO shingles are failing, there’s a safe way to check: stand across the street with a pair of binoculars and look for lifted tabs, missing granules, or exposed nail heads along the roof slope. You can also inspect the gutters for granule buildup. That’s enough to know whether you have a problem, and it costs nothing.

What we don’t recommend is getting on the roof yourself. Walking on an aging shingle roof in Los Angeles means walking on a surface that’s been baking in UV light and heat for years. Aged shingles crumble under foot pressure, and once you break the granule surface, you’ve turned a repair into a replacement. Working on a pitched roof without proper fall protection is dangerous, and it’s how a hundred-dollar fix becomes a ten-thousand-dollar medical bill.
